The Lab is an experimental cafe in Singapore, opened in November 2014 in the Kampong Glam neighbourhood. The cafe drew inspiration from the television series, Breaking Bad, with and an interior that resembles a science laboratory with test tubes, prescription bottles, and droppers used as decor. What’s more, The Lab is a cafe that serves Muslim-friendly fare (halal).
Although they serve quite a healthy variety of dishes such as sandwiches, burgers, salads and pasta, we only managed to try out the desserts and coffee as we’re still full from our lunch.
Under the desserts section, they have cakes, ice cream, waffles as well as ice cream sandwich to choose from. You can create your own waffles or choose from the 4 pre-crafted combinations. We ordered the Rocky Road $15 with a buttermilk waffle as the base, topped with Ferrero ice-cream, mini vegan brownie, black biscuits, marshmallows and drizzled with chocolate. The waffle is not crispy and is below average. Quite disappointing, especially for the price we paid.
Every visit to The Lab would bring you a new and different experience as they experiment with new dishes or beverages by introducing weekly specials or changing the menu. However, we felt that there’s still a lot of room for improvement, especially for the food and coffee.
