SINGAPORE – A familiar face in the local bar community, Richard Li takes over the reins at PARKROYAL on Beach Road’s Club 5 where he will oversee all bar operations, cocktail programs and events at the swanky cocktail bar.
Lured by his love for cocktails and the magic of bartending, Richard’s journey as a bartender started at New Asia Bar in Swissôtel The Stamford where he was handpicked and mentored by world-class bartender Richard Gillam who taught him the art of mixology. Following his stint at New Asia Bar, he spent a couple of years at bespoke bars such as Mitzo and Smoke & Mirrors before landing in BeGin. His tenure at BeGin allowed Richard the opportunity to hone his craft in menu and concept development as well as spirits curation. Under Richard’s guidance and creation of a series of special gin-based cocktails, BeGin was recognised as one of the best gin bars in Singapore.
Having spent his childhood in the Philippines and Taiwan, Richard takes his inspiration from his culturally-rich heritage, crediting the diverse background and rich cultures for helping him hone his love and vigor for flavours and creation. Focusing on flavours that are heavy and savoury, as well as dabbling and experimenting with spices and teas throughout his years as a globetrotter, Richard aims to bring out his flair and experience through craft cocktails at Club 5.
“I have always had an appreciation in the art of mixology, working towards personalized cocktails for every taste bud, mood and palate. Knowing that Club 5’s cocktails take inspiration from the neighbourhood and focuses on local stories feels like home to me, I’m excited to use my skills to showcase and create flavor combinations that take people back to their childhood.”
