How about a beer with your bowl of piping hot clear fish noodles? Sounds strange? but it actually works. Located at 8 Pahang Street is No Milk Bistro. An interesting blend of The Fish Soup Boutique @ Level 1 and on level 2 is the bistro on serving up a delectable array of modern European cuisine with a strong hint of Asian influence, right above the Teochew-style fish soup restaurant. This interesting combination caters to both the lunch/dinner crowds or the folks looking for a drinking hole.
Fish soup lovers will be happy with the Chef, Hoe Gern’s offering of “no-milkified” fish soup menu that’s bursting with umami. Each bowl of Fish Soup (6-7SGD), encompasses 27 years worth of Teochew-style heritage and goodness. The fish soup dishes are served with two evergreen fishes, mackerel and sea bass offered in both the fried and boiled versions. We have to admit the soup is quite addictive and after the meal, we did not get that thirsty feeling.
We also tried the Deep Fried Chicken Wings (8 pieces for 14.8SGD) and were quite amazed. Each wing was crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. The wing had an Asian flavour to it with a tangy linger on the tongue. Our educated guess was that the wings were marinated with galanga, ginger among other spices.
For those looking to share some dishes, consider the Black Char Siu (6.9SGD) and Grilled Pork Belly (6.9SGD) or the Homemade Ngo Hiang (2SGD). We felt that the char siu and grilled pork was alright but the Ngo Hiang was the clear winner. The attention to details shows in the way that each dish is paired with a unique sauce. The homemade assortment of sauces really elevated each dish.
If fusion food is what you fancy, then consider the freshly made tagliatelle. We loved the flavour of the Thai Red Curry with Tiger Prawns (18.8SGD) which had a real firey kick and the thick sauce coated the pasta perfectly.
The Beef Rendang Tagliatelle(16.8SGD) was rich in spices and slightly sweet, the beef portions were generous and I was glad that the sauce was not overly oily. Overall a satisfying dish that I would come back for however I felt that the pasta was a little too al dente for my liking.
Our favourite noodles of the night was the Spicy Fragrant Homemade Egg Noodle with Pork Belly or Fish Belly (8SGD) The Sichuan inspired dish packs a strong umami flavour with 3 levels of spiciness (ask for your prefered). The interesting point of the dish was the accompanying soup, if you ate the noodles with the soup, a different flavour profile permeates the mouth.
The place also offers a palate-pleasing variety of drinks and fresh fruit cocktails, priced from S$10 – S$20. No Milk Rooftop Bistro also offers regular promotions for an even better deal – every night is Ladies’ Night at No Milk, with discounts ranging from 1 for 1 liquor by the glass to 15% off bottles to Korean soju deals (3 bottles for only $42 with a free yakult mixer)
Overall No Milk Bistro offers a good array of quality dishes at reasonable prices. The 2 in 1 concept of a fish soup store and bar provides an interesting melting pot of traditional and new.
This was an invited tasting, though all opinions expressed are our own.
