It is that time of year again! The most anticipated floral display at Gardens by the Bay has officially returned. The 11th edition of Sakura (樱花展) is now open at the Flower Dome, and this year’s experience is particularly special as it marks 60 years of diplomatic relations between Singapore and Japan.
If you’ve been following my travel adventures, you know how much I love the nostalgic charms of Japan. This year, the display transport us specifically to Ishikawa Prefecture, recreating the historic streets once walked by samurai and geisha.
A Pink and White Wonderland
This year’s display is massive, featuring close to 40 varieties of cherry blossoms. You’ll find everything from the dense, double-petalled Prunus ‘Pink Perfection’ to the elegant weeping branches of Prunus pendula.
Key highlights you shouldn’t miss:
- The 8m-tall ‘Somei Yoshino’: A fan-favorite in Japan, known for blossoms that fade from pale pink to near white.
- The “October Cherry”: A new addition called Prunus ‘Jugatsu’, which is unique because it flowers in both autumn and spring.
- Vibrant Peaches: Look out for the Prunus persica ‘Hanamomo’, which adds a vibrant burst of color typical of a Japanese spring.
Exploring the Streets of Ishikawa
The centerpiece this year is a stunning recreation of the Nomura residence, a two-storey home modeled after a samurai house from the Maeda clan. You can actually see traditional arts flown in directly from the region, including gold leaf craftsmanship, lacquerware, and Kutani porcelain.
For those who love a good photo op (like I do!), make sure to check out:
- The Kimono Walkway: A path lined with columns adorned in beautiful, intricate kimono patterns.
- Higashi Chaya District: A walkway inspired by Kanazawa’s traditional teahouse district with its iconic lattice-covered façades.
- The Kenrokuen Tribute: A bridge overlooking a tranquil pond, inspired by one of Japan’s Three Great Landscape Gardens.
Adding a touch of whimsy to the display, familiar Sanrio characters such as Hello Kitty, My Melody, Pompompurin, Cinnamoroll and Kuromi can be spotted among the blossoms in the display too!
