Located opposite the famous white bee hoon in Sembawang is 2 in 1 concept Café and bakery of Common Chefs. Focused on bringing consistency and best quality in food items, the place offers cakes and coffee made freshly in house daily. The place offers a weekend only Menu and we tried some of their specialty dishes.
Shepherd’s Pie(15SGD) made with pork rather than the usual beef gets a thumbs up from us. The creamy potato mash was mellow in flavor and the minced pork was tender without any gamey taste. The mozzarella top was stringy and crusty, overall a nice dish.
Ever heard of a dish called “Wazza” ? It is actually a cross between waffles and a pizza. We tried The Big Breakfast Wazza (12SGD) which is a nice cross between the sweet waffles and savoury breakfast food. I personally liked this because it reminded me of a Macgiddle except that it had crispy bacon, sauteed mushrooms and mozzarella cheese. The sunny-side up egg served on top was also a nice touch.
The Truffle Tatter Tots(8SGD-Small/14SGD-Large) was clearly a house favorite with many of the customers ordering it as a side dish. The truffle oil was very fragrant and the tatter tots were crispy, our 2cents improvement might be a spicy dipping sauce to go with the dish.
We also liked the Okonomiyaki Wazza(11SGD), packed with plenty of bonito flakes. For a meat-free option, the Go Green Wazza ($10) is available for vegetarians.
Richman– Weekends only (16SGD) is a homemade chorizo patty between two brioche buns, sautéed mushrooms, smoked cheddar, caramelised onions and truffle scrambled eggs. A pitcher of nacho cheese sauce is also served with the dish for that over the top richness that would put a smile on any cheese lover’s face.
We also tried the Fish Goujons Taco (12SGD) and The Prawn Taco (14SGD) which comes with crispy dory fish nuggets or fresh grilled paprika prawns on a bed of lettuce, before being topped off with tomato salsa, raisins and a special Mexican mayonnaise. We felt that the fish and prawns were well cooked but the portions are a little small, the side of tortilla chips was also in desperate need of either the nacho cheese dip or maybe some guacamole.
Overall Common Chefs is a nice café with reasonable prices, be prepared to wait as it can get crowded and the place has limited seating. If you are looking at customized cakes or take out orders this is also available online or in-store.
