The Crab House is located in San Francisco’s famed Pier 39 and offers breath-taking views of the Golden Gate Bridge and Fisherman’s Wharf. A visit to Pier 39 is not complete without a truly memorable San Francisco dining experience. During one of my business trips, I visited the Crab House to try out the food.
The indoor seating at the Crab House is a little tight, but a good destination for large family-style gathering. One of the unique feature dish is the Iron Skillet Roast. My colleagues are I order the super combo mussel, shrimp and crab(89.99USD) which is a huge combination of fresh seafood on a hot cast iron plate. For those who are not aware, dungeness crabs are the star attraction when visiting San Francisco. These crabs are treasured for the sweet, tender flesh and a must try even if they are a little on the expensive side.
The mountain of seafood is cooked in a salty garlic sauce which accentuates the fresh taste of the seafood. They offer a melted butter sauce and a slightly spicy sauce to go with the seafood.
We also ordered the middle seafood cioppino(49.99USD) which is a huge bowl of seafood in a rich tomato broth. The rich creamy tomato has a fine balance between the tartness and freshness of the seafood. Each spoonful was packed with mussels, peeled crab, some fish and squid.
Overall the meal was wonderful and quite an experience that I would recommend any first timers to SFO to embark on.
A few tips for those first timers:
- you can purchase a parking coupon from the restaurant to reduce your parking cost if you are parking your car at the pier 39 multi-story carpark
- If you can’t finish your food because of the large portions in USA, you can always take away or “Doggie Bag” it away
- You are usually “assigned” a server and the same person will help you with your request throughout the meal. After the meal, you are recommended to tip your server between 15-17% for the services provided. This is a recommendation and a normal percentage if you had really bad service you can lower that amount to somewhere near 10%
