Located a stone throw away from Tai Seng MRT is One Bar Cafe. Opened by a bunch of friends with a passion for food and music, the place is a cross between a bar, cafe, and a live music entertainment corner. The simple semi-industrial design of the place with warm lighting is a no-frills location that might just be your next ideal hang out spot.
We paid a visit on the eve of National day to try out some of the dishes. We started dinner with the Lak & Roll (4pieces for 10SGD / 8 pieces for 18SGD) enveloped within each piece of crispy golden fried popiah skin was a fresh prawn, glass noodles and a “tau pok” or bean curd skin. The condensed flavour of laksa permeated each bite and is a good start to the meal.
We continued with two pasta dishes, the Kimchi Pulled Pork Mac and Cheese(14SGD) and Mentaiko Pasta (14SGD). The mentaiko pasta has the right mix of mayo to fish eggs and gave the dish a strong umami flavour. The pairing with smoked salmon also brought a nice saltiness to the overall dish.
The kimchi pulled pork was soft and tender and the Korean flavour was on point with the hint of sourness from the kimchi and a hit of spiciness but the “mac and cheese” was more like a carbonara and we felt that the thick cream sauce did not really pair well. We had hoped to see a true baked mac and cheese with strings of melted cheese more integrated with the pulled pork.
The Signature Duck Confit (18SGD) was definitely our favourite dish of the night with a duck that was perfectly executed. With an outstanding crispy skin on the outside, while keeping the meat tender and juicy, this was a highlight that we truly enjoyed. The duck sat on a bed of fluffy whipped potatoes and the brown sauce was really yummy and elevated the dish.
We ended the meal with two different cakes (price varies but it is around 8SGD), the Chocolate Mousse Cake and the Lemon Cheesecake. The cheesecake was light, tangy with a soft tart like crumbly base. The chocolate mocha cake was rich, soft and airy. Both cakes had just the right amount of sweetness perfect with a cup of tea or coffee. You will be happy to know that all the cakes are made in-house with care and dedication.
For those who are into Thai Ice Tea (5SGD) will be happy to know that both the traditional and the green edition gets the thumbs up from us. Both drinks were thick and creamy with a full-bodied tea flavour without being overly sweet.
Overall One Bar Cafe offers a nice environment to chill out with friends over a weekend with live Singing performances from the owners. The good quality food is a good price point that is value for money with no GST and service charge.
Check out some of their facebook page for current promotions such as the 10SGD lunches, workshops, and craft beers! You can also catch some video of the performances on their Facebook page too.
