Last week, I had the opportunity to attend a food tasting by Sakae Sushi, which is launching a new menu with over 120 new selections!
Sakae Sushi’s new menu has a variety of fusion dishes that marry Japanese classics with influences such as Peranakan, Korean, French and Chinese cuisine.
We started with appetizers such as:
Sakae Zensai
Smoked duck wrapped with Japanese cucumber, salmon tataki, and spinach lightly tossed with yuzu dressing. A cold dish to get your appetite going.
Gobo no Kari Age
Burdock Root strips – crispy! Do you know that they are rich in anti-oxidants?
Trio Carpaccio
Ang moh sashimi! Raw scallop, tuna and salmon dressed in a tangy sauce.
Once we had the appetizers, we moved on to the highlights of the new menu – a fusion series of Otah Creations. The otah dishes were some of my favourite – the spicy taste of the otah goes very well with the sushi.
Special Otah Maki.
If you like spicy food, like I do, you may enjoy this dish!
Long Bean Otah
Mackerel otah with long beans, fried in tempura batter.
Besides these two otah dishes, Sakae Sushi also has a new dish called otah bibinba, which we did not get to try.
It’s not all new items on the menu though. Sakae Sushi has also expanded their menu for popular dishes such as aburi (torch-seared sushi), mentai (torch-seared sushi with cod roe and mayonnaise), agemono (fried items) and yakimono (char-grilled skewers).
Sakae Mentai Combo
A combination of scallop, swordfish, salmon and smoked duck sushi topped off with mentai.
Aburi Foie Gras Sushi
The foie gras is panseared on top. Fans of foie gras may want to try this new aburi foie gras sushi, which is quite decadent.
We also tried two side dishes:
Asari Sakamushi
Clams simmered in Japanese rice wine.
Salmon Gindara
A combination of grilled cod fish with salmon, served with thick gravy.
Fruity Tutti Maki
One of the healthiest items on the new menu, if you are looking for something healthy and refreshing.
Next, we move on to the katsu and yakimono dishes!
Mixed Fry Katsu
An assortment of five different kinds of fried katsu – scallops (hotate), prawns (ebi), chicken katsu, oyster (kaki) and Pumpkin Koroke.
Yakimono Deluxe
Eight varieties of char-grilled skewers, such as king prawn with mentai, salmon and swordfish, and scallops with teriyaki glaze.
Here’s the king prawn with mentai!
Sakae Sushi has so many new dishes that I lost track of what I was eating after a while!
I have a few favourites, such as the otah sushi and the ever reliable mentai sushi (can’t go wrong with mentai). Some of the dishes did not work for me, such as the salmon-and-cod-fish fillet, as I felt that the taste of the cod fish was hidden by the stronger taste of salmon in the same bite.
Still, Sakae Sushi has always been value-for-money and the new menu reflects that. It is always a good choice if you are looking for affordable Japanese cuisine!
Do try some of their new dishes when you go to Sakae Sushi next time!
