First Successful Hybrid of “Corpse Flower” Blooms at Gardens by the Bay, Singapore

Amorphophallus ‘John Tan’ – the first successful hybrid of the Corpse Flower (Amorphophallus titanum) is now on display in the “Cloud Forest” conservatory for a limited period only!

This plant was named in honour of Singaporean Mr John Tan Jiew Hoe for his generous support of this hybridization programme. This plant is known to grow at a rate of about 9cm per day and its flowering is unpredictable.

If you’ve been following closely on Gardens by the Bay facebook page, you would have noticed that the plant started to grow extremely fast over the past few days!

On 17th September 2013, the flower finally BLOOM! Measuring at 205cm, the Amorphophallus ‘John Tan’ is currently on display in the “Cloud Forest” cooled conservatory and its flower is estimated to last for about 2 days only!

SO, hurry down to the Cloud Forest for this amazing sight and to experience the smell from this flower. As of what the smell is, I shall leave it to experience it yourself 😛

At the same time, to celebrate its flowering, Gardens by the bay is offering 15% discount off standard rate single conservatory tickets on 18 and 19 September.

The Amorphophallus ‘John Tan’ is located near to the lift lobby inside Cloud Forest.
