Set in an opulent yet cosy ambience, the Lobby Lounge is a perfect place for lazy afternoon tea. Did you know that by night, the Lobby Lounge transforms into live music and cocktails bar? Buffet high teas are somewhat of a common ritual here in Singapore but when we last tried the Conrad Lobby Lounge’s Weekend High Tea offering, we can’t help but get excited about the new offering – the brand new Herb based afternoon tea!
We started with an interesting herb-based welcome drink made from mint, thyme, simple syrup and shaken with ice. The herbal drink was refreshing and added an interesting lingering after taste when paired with the Seafood Platter – Poached Boston Lobster, Irish Oysters, and fresh prawns. The standards of Conrad and seafood shines with a simple sweetness and freshness of the sea.
We continued with the Spicy Shrimp Tacos, the creamy avocado & cheese sauce matched perfectly with the slightly crunchy texture of the fresh prawns. The lime slaw added a slight acidity and the garlic cilantro added another layer of flavour. We loved the textures and this was another showcase of how simple flavors can be outstanding.
The highlight of the afternoon tea went to the mini-tower of savory and sweet delights. We feasted with our eyes admiring each mini works of art. We started with the Smoked Unagi, Cucumber, Guacamole & Mustard Cress Pincho. The chef has brought the flavors of Japan and Mexican together with a good pairing of salty umami Unagi on top of creamy guacamole. The mustard brought a slight heat and the counterbalance of cucumber was a clever move.
The Laksa Leaf Roasted Chicken Sandwich was put together with cream cheese and topped with caramelized onion. The chicken was tender and the onions brought a nice sweetness but we felt that the Laksa flavor lacked something and Laksa leaves at the side of the sandwich did not contribute much to the dish.
The Impossible pops with Minted Yogurt and Togarashi was a perfect pairing. The cooling minted yogurt carried the impossible meat very well.
One of our favorites on tower went to the Smoked duck, cucumber pickles & coriander fig jam Tartlet. The tender smoky duck was moist and the coriander fig jam brought a good sweetness to the dish. The Tartlet was crumbly and cucumber pickles gave a very mild sourish flavor. It was an addictive combination of flavors that left us wanting more.
If you would like to cleanse your palette after the savory delights then dive right into the bright green Kafir Lime & Chocolate Mousse. People who do not like sourish dishes might scrunch up but I loved the sharp sourish exterior. Dig a little deeper and the white chocolate mousse balances the acidity perfectly.
Don’t throw away the pretty Rosella Flower, White Whip Ganache Tart. The flower has a floral taste and matched the buttery tart. The ganache was also rich and not overly sweet.
We ended the tower with the Fresh Mango & Thyme Mousse. Who knew thyme would work in a sweet dessert. The fresh mango exterior was a tad on the sweeter side and the thyme had a good lingering aftertaste.
We round off our afternoon tea with the Plain scone & orange thyme scone served with strawberry jam & orange marmalade. The made to order scone came out warm and smelling wonderful. The Orange marmalade was slightly bitter which we found a little overwhelming on its own however when it was put together with the sweeter strawberry Jam and clotted cream it was much better.
